Audiometric test booths

An audiometric booth is a small acoustic room whose job is to hold the background noise inside it low enough that a hearing test can be believed. It is specified for occupational health services, hospitals, clinics and factory hearing conservation programmes, and the specification comes from the site rather than from a catalogue.

  • The governing criterion is the maximum permissible background noise level inside the test room, which is defined in international standards including ISO 8253 and ANSI/ASA S3.1.
  • The required figure is not the same on every job. It depends on the frequency range tested and on whether supra-aural, insert or free-field presentation is used, so this has to be settled before anything is designed.
  • What drives the specification is the noise level in the space the booth will occupy, not the booth itself. We therefore ask for site information or a noise measurement before proposing anything.
  • Ventilation, lighting, the observation window and the cable entry for the audiometer all have to be designed together, because every opening is a short circuit for sound.
  • Ventilation has to be silenced so it can run during testing. A booth that has to have its fan switched off before each measurement will not be used as intended.
  • Booths are built from modular panel systems, so they can be dismantled and relocated when a floor plan changes. That is a real advantage over building a permanent room.
  • Where the ambient level is high, the answer is a double-wall construction with a structurally isolated inner room, which costs more space and more money. That decision should follow a measurement rather than a guess.
  • Employers whose staff are exposed at or above the levels set by occupational safety law must run a hearing conservation programme that includes audiometric testing. The thresholds and testing intervals follow the legislation in force.

Standards that define the requirement

  • ISO 8253 is the series covering audiometric test methods, and it is what determines how low the background noise in the test room has to be for the result to stand up.
  • ANSI/ASA S3.1 specifies maximum permissible ambient noise levels for audiometric test rooms, broken down by frequency range and by earphone type.
  • Naming these standards states where the requirement comes from. It is not a claim that a delivered booth is certified to them — the achieved figure has to be verified by measurement in the installed position.
