Industrial acoustic steel doors

Steel acoustic doorsets for plant rooms, control rooms, factories, test cells and large building projects. Made to the opening size and the sound insulation the project specifies, and delivered as a factory-assembled unit: leaf, frame, seals, latching hardware and glazing.

  • IAC states a laboratory-tested design range of STC 43 to STC 64, with assemblies rated to NIC 70.
  • The manufacturer selection guidance is STC 50 to achieve a minimum NIC 45, and STC 55 to achieve a minimum NIC 50 once installed. In other words the installed figure is always below the laboratory figure, and the allowance belongs in the design, not in the commissioning report.
  • Perimeter seals and the threshold detail decide the result far more than the leaf does. Cam-lift hinges lower the leaf onto a fixed bottom seal as the door closes, which avoids the maintenance burden of automatic drop seals.
  • Doorsets ship fully assembled with a split frame, so the specified performance does not depend on grouting the frame correctly on site.
  • Fire-rated versions are available at 20, 60 and 90 minutes and at 3 hours, alongside blast-rated and ballistic-rated constructions.
  • Openings beyond roughly 4.3 m (14 ft) use the Super Noise-Lock range, with a 4 in or 6 in leaf, manual or electric operation, and sliding versions where a swing leaf will not fit the space.
  • Acoustic windows in the same family are quoted by the manufacturer from Rw 47 / STC 46 to Rw 68 / STC 68, built to the opening and glazed in laminated safety glass as standard.
  • Goods are handed to the project installation team with fitting instructions. We supply; we do not install.

What we supply

Our work in this family is industrial and project steel doorsets, supplied to the project for the main contractor to fit. That is what suits a construction programme, and it is what we are set up to do. If you are looking for a domestic door supplied and installed at a house or apartment, we are happy to talk through the options and what matters in that situation, and to point you in a sensible direction — a single fitted door is usually better value from a joinery supplier than from us. Do get in touch either way.

Where this is specified

  • Plant rooms, switch rooms and generator rooms
  • Factory control rooms and observation rooms
  • Engine test cells and vibration test laboratories
  • Machinery enclosures and in-plant acoustic rooms
  • Radio, television and recording studios
  • Music practice rooms, auditoria and lecture theatres
  • Secure areas and rooms requiring acoustic privacy

Standards that define the requirement

  • STC and NIC are not the same measurement. STC comes from a laboratory test of the doorset; NIC is measured on the assembly as built and installed. A specification should say which one it is asking for.
  • EN 1634-1 is the fire resistance test method for door and window assemblies. The manufacturer states fire-rated window frames in this family at classifications from E30 to EI90.

These are the documents that set the requirement. Naming one is not a claim that a particular supplied item is certified to it; test evidence is issued per project.
