Acoustic enclosures and barriers

Machinery enclosures, barriers, canopies and absorptive panels for factories and plant compounds, designed from the target level at the receiver rather than from the size of the machine.

• The manufacturer states an enclosure range of roughly 15 dB(A) to more than 50 dB(A) depending on the design and how completely the source is enclosed. In practice the openings needed for cooling and for maintenance access set the ceiling on what is achievable.
• An enclosure sealed tight enough to hit a high number will cook the machine inside it. A workable design settles the intake path, the discharge path and the exhaust route at the same time as the acoustic rating.
• For absorptive free-standing barriers the manufacturer quotes transmission loss up to around 14 dB at 125 Hz, and the absorptive facing reduces the reverberant build-up between parallel barriers and other hard surfaces.
• A barrier only works if it breaks the line of sight between source and receiver. Height and position matter more than the mass of the panel.
• Canopies are supplied factory assembled and finish painted, designed to be lifted and lowered over the source, which keeps site modification work to a minimum.
• Maintenance access has to be designed in. An enclosure that is awkward to work inside gets left open, and then it does nothing at all.
• Project work throughout. Goods are supplied to the project for the contractor to erect.
